चातकस्य वैशिष्ट्यम्

एक एव खगो मानी वने वसति चातकः।

पिपासितो म्रियते वा याचते वा पुरन्दरम्॥

चातकः खगः दृढव्रतः अस्ति। सः केवलं वृष्टिजलं पिबति। यद्यपि वने सरितः नद्यः जलाशयाः च भवन्ति तथापि पिपासितः चातकः तेभ्यः न पिबति। यद् जलं साक्षात् भगवतः मेघवृन्दतः प्राप्तं तदेव पिबति। न अन्यज्जलम्।

सः निश्चयेन दृढसङ्कल्पः अस्ति किल। सः निर्मलं जलम् एव वाञ्छति। प्रदूषितं जलं त्यजति।

मम गुरुः भक्तिं बोधयितुं चातकस्य उदाहरणं उपायुनग्। अत्र तस्य उपदेशः स्थापितः।

The Chataka bird endures many ordeals to secure unsullied raindrops from the clouds. The moment it espies a dark cloud in the sky, it embarks on its adventure. There is water aplenty on the earth in lakes, ponds and rivers. But the Chataka bird has no use for these polluted waters. It waits for the pure raindrops in the month of Karthik and does not seek any other water. It is undaunted by thunder and lightning. It seeks only the pure raindrops falling from the clouds, without fear or concern. It sings in joy as it drinks the raindrops. The Chataka bird is an example of pure love. The true devotee should perform a similar penance (to realise God). He must have the same determination. He must go through similar ordeals to experience the ultimate ecstasy. He must not succumb to the wiles and attractions of the world.

प्रह्लादस्य विश्वासं भक्तिं च नारायणः पर्यैक्षत। बहूनि कष्टानि सहमानः बालकः प्रह्लादः नारायणस्य नाम न अत्यजत्। तं तस्य क्रूरः पिता अग्नौ न्यपातयत्। वनगजैः तं गाहयामास। उपरिष्टात् पर्वतात् न्यपातयत्। तथापि सः पवित्रबालः विश्वासेन नारायणनामजपं कुर्वन् एव आसीत्। अन्तिमकालपर्यन्तं सः सदा सर्वथा हरिचिन्तने निमग्नः आसीत्। एकवारम् अपि श्रीहरिं विना अन्यान् कान् अपि न अयाचत।

सीतायाः दुर्गतिः आसीत्। विवाहानन्तरम् अयोध्याम् आगतवती आसीत्। यदा तस्य भर्तुः श्रीरामस्य यौवराज्याभिषेकः निश्चितः आसीत् तदैव मातुः कैकेय्याः कारणात् राज्यं त्यक्त्वा वनं गन्तव्यम् आसीत् श्रीरामेण। सीता राजप्रासादे एव उषितुम् अर्हा तथापि वनाय रामम् अनुसरति। राज्यं सर्वं त्यक्त्वा वने उषितुं सज्जा भवति। रामाय सर्वं त्यक्तुं सिद्धा किन्तु एकैकी न जीवितुम् अङ्गीकरोति। सा तु रामस्य नित्यं प्राणसमा हिता च।

अस्माकं जीवनानि अपि एवमेव भवन्तु। वयम् एकम् एव लक्ष्यम् आश्रित्य सर्वथा प्रयतामहै। कदापि स्खलिताः न भवेयुः।
